Rumors have circulated for months now that Apple plans to unveil the new iPhone 5 at a September 12 event in San Francisco along with a smaller iPad, dubbed the iPad Mini in press reports, though there’s no telling what Apple will call it.
But now it’s sounding more like Apple’s next generation iPhone and its so-called “iPad mini” will debut at two separate events this fall, rather than a single one as has been widely speculated.
Some bloggers, notably Daring Fireball’s Jon Gruber, said earlier it would make more sense for Apple to hold two separate events. More recently All Things D claims its sources confirm the iPad mini won’t be unveiled until October at a separate event so that Apple can maximize the impact of the new iPhone’s release. Bloomberg had reported something similar last month, citing two unnamed sources said to have knowledge of Apple's plans.
Apple acknowledged in its last earnings call that sales of of its iPhone 4S were impacted by rumors of new products in the pipeline, none of which Apple has confirmed. But while some consumers may have held off buying an iPhone in anticipation of what’s expected to be a slightly bigger iPhone 5, iPad sales have continued to boom.
Rather than impact iPad sales directly, a lower cost, smaller iPad mini could help Apple attract customers who otherwise would have bought a $199 Android tablet from the likes of either Amazon (Kindle Fire) or Google (Nexus 7). Apple's only current lower cost alternative tablet is the iPad 2 ($399). Some have speculated an iPad Mini with 7.85-inch display would sell for $299.
An October release would still give Apple plenty of time to hit the all-important holiday shopping season.
